When a #13 seed makes the Sweet 16 in March, everyone at your office just can't stop talking about them. "Seriously, how about that Stephen Curry?" they say on Monday morning after four consecutive 13-hour marathons of televised basketball. But these Cinderella stories always end before the title game. Everyone knows these little world-beaters have no real shot against the big boys, right? Wrong.
Fresno State just completed what is arguably the most improbable run to to a title in collegiate athletic history with a 6-1 victory over Georgia. If you missed the game, right fielder Steve Detwiler hit two home runs and a double while driving in all six runs for the champions. A pretty impressive performance if you take the fact he's got a torn ligament in his hand into account. In order to even get to Omaha, the team that was just 33-27 during the regular season had to win the WAC tournament and survive three elimination games during regionals. They were a #4 seed in their region. There is no #5 seed. No team in the history of college sports has been seeded that low and won the national title. Until tonight.
